JUNE 8, 2001 Representative Steve Largent (R-Okla.) on Thursday formally announced he is leaving his post in November to run for Governor of Oklahoma. A number of candidates eyeing Largent's post have been waiting on his decision. Former Cherokee Nation Principal Chief and former Assistant Secretary Ross Swimmer (R) has formed an exploratory committee. First Lady Cathy Keating (R) is the only one so far to declare her candidacy. If he decides to run and is elected, Swimmer would be the second Cherokee tribal member in Congress. Rep. Brad Carson (D-Okla.) was elected last fall. Get the Story:
