Vote sought on campaign finance bill

THURSDAY, JULY 19, 2001 Supporters of a campaign finance bill that Republican leaders shelved in the House say they will try to force a vote on the issue. After losing a procedural vote, Speaker Rep. Dennis Haster (R-Ill.) last week shelved the bill even before the House got to debate it. He said he had no immediate plans to put it back on the House schedule. But now Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn.), one of the bill's sponsors, says he will seek a discharge petition. The petition requires the support of 218 members to force a vote. The Shays bill is similar to one passed by the Senate. It bans soft money contributions and applies other limits on campaign spending by national political parties and interest groups. Get the Story:
