FRIDAY, JULY 20, 2001 Responding to criticism about his credibility in the international community, President Bush on Thursday defended himself as he headed into a week of meetings with European leaders. He held a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Tony Blair to respond to comments made by Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.). He said that he was "plenty capable" of handling international affairs. In response, Daschle said his doubts about Bush's ability may have been ill-timed but that he stands by them. Bush's foreign policy advisor, Condoleeza Rice, on Wednesday had called Daschle to, in the words of The Washington Post, "express displeasure" after hearing what was said about the President.
