JULY 2, 2001 After weeks or partisan bickering, the Senate on Friday approved an organizing resolution which finalizes the transfer of power from the Republicans to the Democrats. As part of the agreement, Democrats will get a one seat majority on all legislative committees. Each committee, including Indian Affairs, will get another Democratic member. Regarding nominees to the federal bench, Democrats agreed to make public any opposition by a home-state Senator. Democrats, however, did not outright agree to guaranteeing a full Senate vote for potential Supreme Court nominees although the Judiciary Committee said it will honor the tradition of doing so.
