Calif. Democrats to squeeze out Condit

THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2001

Democratic leaders in California are proposing a redistricting plan they hope will persuade embattled Rep. Gary Condit not to run, The Washington Post reports today.

Members of the party have been mostly quiet about Condit's handling of the disappearance of former government intern Chandra Levy. Gov. Gray Davis broke his silence to criticize his close friend earlier this week, leading the two Condit children to leave their jobs in the governor's office.

Polls are showing that Condit is losing support among his consituents.
