MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2001 Elizabeth Dole, former U.S. government official and former head of the American Red Cross, has officially declared her candidacy for Senator of North Carolina. Dole is seeking the Republican nomination for the seat being vacated by Sen. Jesse Helms. A number of other Republicans are also seeking the nomination. North Carolina is home to the Eastern Band of Cherokees. Get the Story:
