By a voice vote, the House on Monday unanimously approved legislation to pay the United Nations $582 million in back dues.

The payment had been held up by Republican conservatives. But in the light of the United States seeking international support for its war on terrorism, lawmakers said paying the dues was necessary.

The Senate approved payment in February. The U.S. still owes almost $300 million to the U.N.

American public opinion of the U.N. has improved since the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, according to an Associated Press poll.
