Norton won't scrap BIA overhaul

More than 500 people attended the first formal consultation session over the proposed Bureau of Indian Trust Assets Management on Thursday.

Although tribal leaders asked Secretary of Interior Gale Norton to withdraw the plan, she said she couldn't. The proposal has already been offered to a federal court, so it can't be stopped, she said.

Tribal leaders, however, said they would help Norton sort out the mess. They said they would inform U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth of the need for ongoing consultation so that the Bush administration could pull the plan back without being penalized by the court.
