WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2001

Former Montana Gov. Marc Racicot is being named by President Bush to head the Republican National Committee, media sources are reporting today.

Racicot is well known to tribes and Indians in his state but first came to national prominence after the 2000 presidential election. He quickly rushed to Bush's side and argued that all recounts in Florida should end.

Racicot was up for several Bush jobs, including Attorney General, but stepped out of the running, citing family issues. He subsequently joined a lobbying and law firm and his was the counsel of record for the record industry in its fight against Napster.

Most recently, he was tapped by Bush as a special trade envoy to represent the United States in highly volatile talks with Canada over lumber.
