Indian Country lacks confidence in Norton

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2002

The latest Indian Country Today poll finds an overwhelming majority of Native Americans have little confidence in Secretary of Interior Gale Norton's handling of the trust fund.

Sixty percent of respondents said they had "no confidence" Norton's department could ever provide an accurate historical accounting for the assets of 300,000 American Indians. An additional 30 percent said they were "not very confident."

Overall, very few believe Norton has handled Indian issues well. Nearly 50 percent believed she was "not very effective," while 37 said she was "not effective at all."

Fourteen percent thought she was doing no better or no worse than her predecessors.
