WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 2002 President Bush will push conservative nominees to the federal bench despite facing serious challenges by Democrats in the Senate, The Washington Post reports today. Karl Rove, one of Bush's advisers, told a Christian group last week that the rejection of Charles Pickering, a controversial appeals court nominee, won't deter the administration, the paper reports. The Senate is challenging the wrong man, he is quoted as saying. Rove also implied Bush would nominate a conservative to the Supreme Court. No Justice has said he or she will retire. In related news, Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday questioned the nomination of Paul Cassell to the federal bench. They criticized his Supreme Court case in which he argued the Miranda warnings be rejected. Cassell, a University of Utah law professor, lost the case and told the committee he would uphold the law as it stands. He is nominated to federal court in Utah. Get the Story:
