Russell Means rights request denied

TUESDAY, APRIL 2, 2002

New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson last month rejected a request by American Indian actor and activist Russell Means to restore his full citizenship rights.

Means has a felony conviction in South Dakota that stems from his days in the American Indian Movement. As a result, New Mexico law prevents him from running for public office without a governor's pardon or a restoration certificate.

Means is running on an independent ticket for governor.
