FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 2002

Army Secretary and former Enron executive Thomas E. White received free rides on the failed company's jet while his confirmation was pending in the Senate, The Washington Post reports today.

In an interview with the paper, White said he made several voluntary trips to meet with members of Bush administration's transition team. He defended his use of the plane and said he also did business on behalf of his former employer while in Washington, D.C.

White's ties to Enron have been of debate recently mainly because he failed to disclose contacts after he joined the administration. He has said he would step down if his relationship became a distraction.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is asking some of President Bush's nominees if they have ties to the bankrupt company.
