Judicial nominees get stacked

MONDAY, APRIL 8, 2002

The Senate Judiciary Committee is delaying hearings on nominees Democrats on the panel consider too conservative for the federal bench.

Less controversial nominees are getting reviewed by the Democrat-controlled committee first while others are forced to wait their turn. The delay is part of the battle Democrats, Republicans and the White House are fighting over the makeup of the federal judiciary.

Republicans and the White House were dealt a setback when Charles Pickering, a federal judge, was rejected by the committee along party lines. Still, President Bush has been very direct in saying he wants conservatives in the courts.
