Mont. county to discuss new districts

MONDAY, APRIL 8, 2002

Blaine County in Montana will hold a series of public hearings to redraw voting districts after a federal judge found the existing system discriminates against Native Americans.

Two alternatives to the existing at-large voting system will be discussed at the six meetings this week. An appeal of the judge's decision is being considered.

Mountain States Legal Foundation, a Colorado firm which once employed Secretary of Interior Gale Norton, has been handling the case. Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management Rebecca W. Watson was helping the county prior to joining the Bush administration.
