An internal audit has found abuse of Department of Interior credit cards.

In a December 2001 report, Inspector General Earl G. Devaney cited numerous problems. "The Department of the Interior does not have an adequate control environment for its purchase charge card program," he wrote.

The probe said credit cards were used to pay phone bills, rent, furniture, jewelry and for cash advances. Some ex-employees still have charging authority, according to Devaney.
