Olympics too costly for some tribes

The event of a lifetime is turning out to be the nightmare for some tribes.

The 2002 Winter Olympics are taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah, this winter. A number of tribes will be attending, including the Navajo Nation, who is putting on two cultural pavilions.

But other tribes have said participation has taken its monetary and spiritual tolls. Not only must tribes pay for everything, some feel they are being ignored on their own traditional land by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee and affiliates.

The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of Idaho dropped out of any events as a result of high costs. The tribes also said they were misled by an Olympic consultant.
