Redskins name called 'dehumanizing'

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments on Wednesday passed a resolution calling on the Washington Redskins football team to drop its name because it is "demeaning and dehumanizing" to Native Americans.

But the team said it won't be changing the name any time soon. The council has no enforcing power over the team and only said the resolution was a request not a demand.

A lawsuit filed by several Native activists led the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to cancel the team's trademarks.
