Tribal papers out of luck in press world

MAY 22, 2001

A little known Congressional rule prevents tribally owned newspapers like Indian Country Today from obtaining press credentials in the White House and Capitol Hill.

The Senate Periodical Press Gallery won't issue press credentials to publications owned by any government, tribal ones included. Veteran Native journalist Mark Trahant was turned down in 1976 for credentials and most recently, Brian Stockes of ICT was denied.

An ICT attorney has asked the Senate Rules Committee to issue an exemption to tribal governments.
