The stories keep coming so we'll keep covering them. The latest news on the Mashantucket Pequot and other Connecticut tribes. In Tribal Law:
Three Connecticut towns, Preston, North Stonington, and Ledyard, have asked Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt to intervene in the federal recognition process of Paucatuck Eastern Pequots and the Eastern Pequots. The towns also allege BIA director Kevin Gover has a conflict of interest since he represented the Golden Hill Paugussetts, a state recognized tribe, in their bid for federal recognition. The towns also challenge the BIA's authority to recognize tribes.

From the Talking Circle:
"Without Reservation, the new book by Jeff Benedict about the Mashantucket Pequots, plays directly into the hands of the tribe's detractors and raises to a new level questions about the tribe's legitimacy...Benedict's work does little to shed light on the historical or genealogical points on which the debate hinges."
EDITORIAL: Could all this be based on a lie? (The New London Day 5/7)

"In regard to the recent release of the book “Without Reservation” by Jeff Benedict, I realize there are seven criteria that must be met for the federal recognition process. How is it that one lie can mushroom into a billion-dollar corporation?"

"A few days ago, while visiting friends in Pawcatuck, I was shown an old scrapbook that had been assembled by an elderly resident of the Westerly-Stonington area. It contained numerous news articles reflecting local historic events. One article, published on June 7, 1922, commemorated the anniversary of the massacre of the Mystic Pequot tribe on June 5, 1637."
