Bill Lawrence has been publishing Native American Press / Ojibwe News for thirteen years, an independent paper published in Minnesota which has been criticized for its reporting style.

The paper is faulted on its use of anonymous and single sources. Mark Anthony Rolo, executive director the Native American Journalists Association, goes so far as to say the paper lacks "journalistic standards."

To Lawrence, a Red Lake Ojibwe tribal member, his paper is about advocacy. In this role, he has also been criticized -- He is a member of a national anti-treaty rights and anti-tribal sovereignty organization.

The paper has been sued three times for libel, prevailing twice. Lawrence settled the third with American Indian Movement leader Vernon Bellecourt in February.
