OCTOBER 17, 2000 Oglala Lakota activist and actor Russell Means spoke at The College of Santa Fe in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Monday night, speaking on issues ranging from politics to Columbus Day. Means considers himself a Libertarian. He once sought the Presidential nomination from the Libertarian Party in 1988. At his speech, Means referred to his own controversies. "I can keep track of the felonies; the misdemeanors just pile up," he told the crowd, as reported by The Albuquerque Journal. Means resides part of the time in a Santa Fe community since his marriage to a Navajo woman. Prior to that, he was married to another Navajo woman, during which he was allegedly involved in a confrontation with her family on the Navajo Nation. He challenged the sovereignty of the Navajo tribal courts over him. The Navajo Nation Supreme Court, however, disagreed and ruled he is subject to their jurisdiction. Get the Story:
