EDITORIAL: Towns right to reject talks
OCTOBER 27, 2000

In an editorial today, The New London Day says three Connecticut towns are right to reject mediation with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

The paper says talks with the tribe have been attempted before and have failed and that the renewed call for mediation is a political ploy by local politicians. The paper says the towns should continue pursuing their anti-annexation lawsuit against the Department of Interior and seek Congressional help.

In a previous editorial, the paper has also advocated that Congress "fix" the 1983 Mashantucket Pequot Settlement Act. But in this editorial, the paper doesn't make note of the fact that an attempt to prevent tribes like the Mashantucket from expanding their reservation failed not only once, but twice.

Senator Joe Lieberman (D-Conn) has introduced bills to prevent the Interior from taking land into trust for wealthy tribes. But they have failed, due to opposition.
