Ex-Presidents face off at Pine Ridge

OCTOBER 5, 2000 Harold Dean Salway and John Yellow Bird Steele, both former Presidents of the Oglala Lakota tribe, were the top two vote getters in the Pine Ridge primary and will face each other in the election next month, according to unofficial results. Salway has led the tribe since the mid-1980s. He was suspended in February by the council amidst a political struggle which has involved the takeover of tribal headquarters.
