NOVEMBER 6, 2000

In an interview with The Argus Leader, Oglala Lakota activist and actor Russell Means says racism is holding back the ability of the state of South Dakota to join with Native Americans and prosper.

Means says the state could be benefiting from a positive economic relationship with tribes. He points to New Mexico, where he lives part time, as a state which embraces its three cultures.

Means also says the federal government should deal with tribes one on one and settle land claims in the Black Hills, for instance. He also says the American Indian Movement is dead from dysfunction.

In various public appearances, Means has said he is still a member the movement.
