EDITORIAL: Town right to exclude tribes
DECEMBER 4, 2000

An editorial in today's issue of The New London Day says the Connecticut town of North Stonington is right not to talk with local tribes about unsettled legal matters.

At the same time, the paper says local tribes and the town have similar interests in protecting the area. The paper also says the tribes aren't prevented from participating in discussions on local development.

Along with Ledyard and Preston, the town of North Stonington has rejected talking with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation over its annexation of 165 acres of land to their reservation. The town also opposes the federal recognition of the Eastern Pequot and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribes.
