JANUARY 29, 2001

A Red Lake Ojibwe man from Minnesota was among more than a 100 Americans pardoned by President Bill Clinton before he left office on January 20.

Dennis Joseph Smith was dishonorably discharged from the Army and served a six month sentence in the 19502 for an unauthorized absence. The Korean War veteran wrote to the Department of Justice seeking a pardon and was granted it but he didn't find out until The Minneapolis Star Tribune informed a family member of the pardon.
