EDITORIAL: State should abide by treaties

JANUARY 29, 2001 In an editorial today, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer says the state of Washington has a duty to abide by treaties with Indian tribes and should repair culverts in order to help save dwindling runs of salmon. The tribes recently filed a lawsuit seeking to force the state to fix the culverts on a faster schedule the state has planned. The state says it is disappointed with the lawsuit but the paper says the state should fix them within five years rather than the 20 to 100 years it has projected. Get the Story:
