Columbus Day cases on hold

FEBRUARY 1, 2001

An order preventing Colorado officials in Denver County from proceeding with cases against 140 Columbus Day protesters was filed on Tuesday in district court.

The protesters were arrested during an October 7 protest against a Columbus Day parade. They are seeking prosecution by a special attorney because they say Denver's city attorney has a conflict of interest.

C. Wallach Wortham was involved in negotiations between local Indian leaders and an Italian-American group who organized the parade. After agreeing not to use the Columbus name in the parade, the group changed its mind and the city said it had to allow them to have the parade because it was protected by freedom of speech.
