MARCH 26, 2001 Venetie Traditional Chief Abraham Christian died at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital on Saturday after suffering a heart attack. He was 87. Abraham helped establish the tribe's former reservation, which was terminated by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) of 1971. The tribal council attempted to exert sovereignty over the former reservation but their case was eventually rejected by the Supreme Court in 1998 because the Justices unanimously found that ANCSA dissolved the reservation.
