MARCH 5, 2001

In an editorial, Lance Johnson, managing editor of The New London Day, wonders if southeastern Connecticut can really get over its Indian problem.

Too much discontent, ranging from town leaders to author Jeff Benedict, has prevented level-headed discussion about the relationship between the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and three local towns, says Johnson. He also says the towns have somewhat ignored the advice of their own lawyers by not negotiating with the tribe over their land disputes.

The towns and the tribe are supposed to meet March 12 to discuss their relationship but the towns have asked that their lawyer Tom Tureen not be present and that fee-into-trust not be discussed. The towns and the state of Connecticut lost their lawsuit against the Department of Interior for taking 165 acres of land into trust for the tribe but have asked the Supreme Court to review it.
