APRIL 18, 2001 Alaska Governor Tony Knowles on Tuesday called for a broad range of actions in response to the paint-ball attacks which targeted Alaska Natives. Knowles said the state needs a tougher hate crimes law, public hearings to address racism, and more training for police. The Alaska Federation of Natives said Knowles' proposals are a step in the right direction. In January, three White males videotaped themselves attacking Alaska Natives on the streets of Anchorage. One is being charged on several misdemeanor assault counts. The other two are juveniles and police won't release the status of their charges. The two have been suspended from a local high school.
