Cheyenne 'woman warrior' dies

APRIL 24, 2001 Florence Whiteman, one of the last woman warriors of the Northern Cheyenne Nation of Montana, died on Sunday at the age of 74. Whiteman was known as a teacher and historian of Northern Cheyenne culture. She was one of the last Cheyenne to have a traditional, arranged marriage. She was also raised by her grandparents, whose generation remembered the days when buffalo was plentiful and when attacks by the Army were common. Get the Story:
