MAY 1, 2000 A group, including Massachusetts Commission on Indian Affairs Jim Peters (Mashpee Wampanoag), toured Deer Island in that state's Boston Harbor. Deer Island was used by English colonists as an interment camp during King Philip's War in the 1670s. The group toured the island with federal and state officials who are planning a memorial and recreation area for the 200-acre island. Group members complained about the possibiity of it being used for fun, given the nature of the site. Get the Story:
