Governor forms racism commission

MAY 2, 2001 Alaska Governor Tony Knowles on Tuesday announced the creation of the Governor's Commission on Tolerance. The commission will focus on racism in the state and will provide a report to Knowles by November 30. It consists of 14 members, including Alaska Native leaders. The commission was created after the video-taped attacks of Alaska Natives by a group of Whites. But there have been other incidents, including the rapes and killings of Alaska Native women, that Natives have long complained about. Get the Story:
