Dave Sones, the director of natural resources for the Makah Nation of Washington, thanked area tribes for supporting the whale hunt. He credits their support with helping to change public opinion to favor the hunt.

Joe Scordino of the National Marine Fisheries Service called the hunt a successful implementation of treaty rights.

Anti-whaling protesters claim the window for the Makah to hunt a whale this season is over. But the scientist they quoted said the the time period was not over, although the peak has passed.

The comments came at a meeting of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission.
