JUNE 15, 2000

Having won 62 percent of the vote, Melanie Benjamin has been elected the new chairwoman of the Mille Lacs Ojibwe tribe in Minnesota. Benjamin defeated incumbent Marge Anderson, the nationally acclaimed leader who helped lead the tribe to financial success.

Benjamin campaigned on giving a voice back to tribal members, greater tribal accountability, and potentially giving more of the profits from Grand Casino Mille Lacs to members.
