Town to hold forum
JUNE 16, 2000

Following in the footsteps of other Connecticut towns, the town of Kent will hold a forum to discuss issues associated with tribes and tribal recognition. The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation's 400-acre reservation is located in Kent and the tribe may soon receive word on whether or not they will receive federal recognition from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Town officials from North Stonington, Montville, and Preston will attend the meeting to discuss what its like to live near a reservation.

A forum held by North Stonington, Preston, and Ledyard in May turned into a debate on race and politics as tribal members squared off with local residents.

Schaghticoke Chief Richard Velky said he will attend the forum to answer questions and is happy Kent is holding the meeting.
