JUNE 26, 2000

The month of June marks a voluntary ban on climbing at Devils Tower National Park in Wyoming, where many tribes hold ceremonies, sweat lodges, vision quests, and sun dances at the sacred site.

The voluntary ban was instituted in 1995 by the National Parks Service after talks between Native Americans and climbers.

The NPS says most climbers honor the ban citing and 80 percent drop in climbers during the month.
