"Rio Arriba leaders have other fish to fry." A Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper editorial published today calls Rio Arriba County officials' dispute with the Jicarilla Apache Tribe a waste of money and says the officials have descended into "un-neighborliness."

On June 29, County officials cut a lock and entered Jicarilla land, intending to survey the land to turn it into a road for public use. The land in question was brought into trust for the tribe, a move the County has long protested.

The New Mexican says the county's efforts will cost millions of dollars the county cannot afford to spend and that the project will mostly benefit the tribe who does not want the project at all.

The tribe intends to fight the county in court. The New Mexican says this will waste more money and that the county should consider an offer by the tribe for use of land nearby.
