In an editorial "Free press = free society" published today, The Billings Gazette comments on the state of freedom of the press on reservations.

The paper quotes a study written by Karen Lincoln Michel, a free-lance writer that appeared in the Columbia Journalism Review. The paper cites examples of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma newspaper and the Lummi Nation of Washington newsletter.

The paper says that some Montana tribal governments have exploited their own people through the press. The paper does not cite any tribes or examples.
