About 100 people on Wednesday night attended the first public hearing on a statewide commission designed to explore the extent of racism and intolerance in Alaska.

Judging by the stories told by participants, Governor Tony Knowles (D) has a lot on his hands to address the issue. His first step, of course, was creating the Commission on Tolerance, which heard from Alaska Native other citizens who urged hate crime laws, more job training, school curricula which includes Native history and diversity training for state employees.
