JULY 21, 2000 Tribal opposition in Connecticut is growing, now that two coalitions of towns have begun discussing expanding their alliances beyond the borders of the state and into Massachusetts and potentially Rhode Island. The towns of North Stonington, Ledyard, and Preston are at the forefront. The towns of Shelton, Colchester, Kent, Orange, Monroe, Trumbull, and New Milford recently banned together and met with the other three to discuss fighting federal recognition, land claims, gaming, and other Indian policy and law issues. As more tribes in the state seek recognition, the towns feel a threat from the possibility of living next to a federally recognized tribe. With tribes in Massachusetts like the Nipmuck seeeking recognition, the leaders hope to find alliances there. Two Nipmuck tribes are "active" on the BIA's federal recognition list. The Nipmuc Nation - Hassanamisco Band and the Nipmuck Nation - Chaubunagungamaug Band await findings. Get the Story:
