The recent death of a Navajo transgendered, gay teen in Colorado has raised awareness of not only hate crimes but the struggles gay and lesbian Native Americans face.

Some tribal cultures had a role and place for "two-spirits," a contemporary term for Native gays and lesbians. With the increased presence of non-Indians, the roles are said to ahve gradually disappeared.

Fred C. Martinez Jr. was found dead last month. A suspect has been arrested and is alleged to have bragged he killed a gay person.
