JULY 24, 2000 Mark Trahant has a long history in Native news. The Shoshone/Bannock journalist began his career at age 19 as editor of the tribe's newspaper. Reporting on then Navajo Nation President Peter MacDonald caused controversies during his stint as editor of The Navajo Times. He started up his own rival newspaper, Navajo Nation Today but it closed after 18 months. He's also worked for the The Arizona Republic and the Salt Lake Tribune, currently writing as a columnist for The Seattle Times. He is past president of the Native American Journalists Association.
