JULY 25, 2000 Two big oil executives are joining forces today as former Secretary of Defense Richard Bruce Cheney agreed to be the running mate of Texas Governor George W Bush. Republicans have praised the choice of Cheney, who served six terms in Congress for his home state of Wyoming and Chief of Staff for President Gerald Ford. Meanwhile, Democrats say the choice is more a reflection of Bush's father, former President George Bush. Cheney was Bush's Chief of Staff at the Pentagon, presiding over the Persian Gulf War. As a member of the House of Representatives, Cheney has a conservative voting record. He voted against a ban on "cop killer" bullets and a ban on plastic guns. He also voted against the Department of Education and the Headstart program. In terms of elders, he voted against the Older Americans bill. Cheney is also pro-life. He voted against federal funding for abortions of victims of rape and incest. He also opposed the funding for the Clean Water Act and for safe drinking water. He was opposed to the the Endangered Species Act and voted against the Equal Rights Amendment. Related Stories:
