JULY 25, 2000

A guest columnist today in The Seattle Times say that treaties with Indian nations are the supreme law of the land and must be respected, along with indigenous rights.

John Boonstra writes that instead of trying to abolish tribal governments, leaders need to work with tribal governments on common issues like yunting rights, alcohol sales, land use, and water rights.

"Where is the integrity in further violating our word and disrespecting our own U.S. Constitution? Where is our will to affirm diversity and tradition as the strongest ingredients to our unity?" asks Boonstra.
