Miccosukee: The Republican Tribe

JULY 3, 2000 The Miccosukee Tribe of Florida stand out in Indian Country for several reasons, the first having to do with resistance to removal to Indian Territory in Oklahoma. Since then, the tribe has come to know wealth through its gaming operations. The tribe lacks a Class III gaming compact with the state of Florida. The Miccosukee language and culture have been well preserved over the years and Chairman Billy Cypress said its acceptable for kids to drop out of school if it interferes with their home life. The graduation rate is a mere 18 percent. Cypress is a staunch Republican and a good friend of Senator Slade Gorton, reviled by Indians throughout the country. He also said "Jeb Bush, I would say, has been a friend of Indian people." Get the Story:
