AUGUST 22, 2000 Wilma Mankiller, Former Chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, was joined by current Chief Chad Smith and other tribal leaders in support of an Indian statue chosen to appear on top of the state capitol dome in Tulsa. The 20-foot tall bronze statue will be funded by private donations and is expected to cost around $300,000. Other Native Oklahomans, such as humorist Will Rogers and athlete Jim Thorpe were also suggested by others, but the statue won't be a tribute to any specific tribe or individual. Get the Story:
