FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 2001

The U.S. Civil Rights Commission on Thursday started a two-day hearing on racism in the state of Alaska.

The commission heard of persistent racism against Alaska Natives and other minorities. Unsolves rapes and homicides and high incarceration of Natives were pointed out as problems to the commission.

Governor Tony Knowles said progress has been made to end discrimination. But he says Alaska Natives are receiving substandard education and public safety services because many live in rural areas.

The meeting continues today in Anchorage.
